Hemp Jewlery Pattern

Hemp Anklet

This is what we are going to make! The knots used for this hemp anklet or hemp bracelet (whatever you wish) are the square knot and the switch knot.

This pattern is using 20# test hemp twine and 3 wooden beads. The size of this piece of jewelry is 9 inches.

What you will need:

  • Macrame board (or something to pin your work down on)
  • 3 Beads…any type of bead that you wish.
  • 20 # hemp twine
  • Patience

Please note: This pattern is for personal use only. If you wish to use it for commerial use, be nice and contact me for permission.

Step 1:

Cut 4 stands of hemp about 45-50 inches. ( I like to have extra length for good measure ;) ) Take a look at how much cord do I need post to help you with understanding how I came to this length.

Tie all strands in an overhand knot, leaving about 3-4 inches of extra cord before the knot. (these are used to tie together for a closure)

Step 2:

Pin your knot down and make square knots for about 1 3/4 inches.  Some people like to count the square knots, I don’t, I just measure in inches.

Step 3:

Make a switch knot. Make sure you measure how long you make the switch knot because when you make the next switch knot you are going to want to make it the same size. I made mine about an inch long.

Step 4:

Add your bead! Your only going to add the bead on the center two strands (which are your knot bearing cords) and then make a square knot.

Step 5:

Make another switch knot. (Remember to make it the same length as the first one)

Step 6:

Repeat Step 4 then step 5 two more times.

Step 7:

Now make square knots until the end of your jewelry piece. For this piece it will be 1 3/4 inches. (It should be the same length as step number 2) then make an overhand knot and you are DONE!

Cut any extra length of cord left over after your overhand knot, but make sure you leave 3 or 4 inches you that you can tie it to the other end for closure

How to make alternating square knots

The alternating square knot is a cool hemp knot technique that can be used a variety of ways. It makes a nice basket weave pattern, depending on how many hemp cords that you use.

In these instructions, I have “exploded” the knot pattern so that you can see how it is done. Of course with real life jewelry your knots won’t be this far apart

I am using 8 strands of cord with this tutorial. I recommend that you use 8 cords to start with until you learn the concept behind the technique.

Step One:

To start I pinned down two sets of 4 cords each, and made a square knot on each set. ( I know this picture sucks, but it is to show you how I started it) I also set aside the far right 2 cords and the far left two cords. You can see I am left with the 4 ‘center’ cords now to work with.

Step Two:

I am going to take the ‘center’ 4 cords and make a square knot, using the 2 most center as my knot bearers.

Step 3:

I am going to set aside the 4 most left cords and ONLY work with the 4 most right cords now.  With these right 4 cords I am going to make a square knot.

Make sure that you line up the square knot as best that you can with the square knot above it. (In the example it is the first knot at the top that I made.)

In the picture they do not look lined up due to the fact that I am leaving a lot of space in between each ‘row’.

Step 4:

Now I am going to move over to the left 4 knots that I set aside in step 3 and going to do the same thing…make a square knot with them.

Now I want you to look, I have made “rows”…the first two knots at the top (row 1), the center knot (row 2) and then the next 2 knots (row 3)

The rows that have more than one knot need to be lined up. If not, you are going to end up having a squirrely looking pattern.

Step 5:

Now, back to the center 4 cords. (Remember the first step we set aside the far 2 left cords and the far two right cords? well do it again)

THAT’S IT!

Experiment, practice, have fun with it. The most difficult thing is to get your knots to line up with each other, but with practice you will get it.

What kind of hemp jewelry patterns are you looking for?

I have been trying to figure out what kind of jewelry patterns to post on here for my readers.  To be able to do this effectively, I am going to need input from ya’ll.  I would hate to put up a bunch of patterns and then no one like them and not be interested in trying to do them :)

So I have decided to ask for your help! I do have a couple of ideas for patterns, but my ideas only go so far and I want to get you involved as well.

Lets be honest, it is you that is going to be making these patterns, so wouldn’t it make sense to get your tastes, and likes? I think so.

With that said, if you would like to leave a comment on what kinds of patterns you would like to try out please do!! Even if you don’t know the name of the knots, or just have a vague idea of what you want to make, describe it the best that you can.

If you don’t want to leave a comment, you can also contact me.
